The Project

The rapid development of mobile telephony has contributed, in recent years, to the rapid the spread of a large number of antennas on the territory, needed for the transmission and reception of signals from mobile phones. The enormous increase of electromagnetic sources have increased the interest in public opinion regarding both the environmental impact and the issues related to human health.

The limits of exposure for the population to electromagnetic fields should fall within the limits reported in Table 1 of the Italian D.M. 10/9/98 n. 381:

  • 6 V/m effective value (rms) for the electric field
  • 0.016 A/m effective value (rms) for the magnetic field

These values should not be exceeded in proximity of buildings used as residence regardless of frequency, with the refernce values computed as average over an area equivalent to the vertical section of the human body, and for any interval of 6 minutes for frequencies ranging from 3 MHz to 300 GHz, which also include the frequencies employed by the considered mobile systems.

For all these reasons, the Municipality of Grottaferrata has planned to perform a study to be included in its town plan, which will regard the installation of (fixed) base station for cellular systems by operators of public mobile radio services.

RadioLabs activities

The RadioLabs consortium has provided a document related to the town plan, and a rule book which should be considerd when deciding on the installation of nwe base station for cellular systems in the Municipality of Grottaferrata.

The redacted documents supply information regarding both existing and foreseen installations, and consist of a technical report accompanied by a map, and a set of rules for the antennas which indicates:

  • the areas where it would be preferable to release licenses for the installation of new radio stations for mobile telephony services;
  • the areas where it is not recommended or discouraged to install new radio stations, in accordance with the applicable legal regulation.
